About PMBOK

According to Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) is the framework of best practices, processes and terms that are employed as standards within the project management industry.

It was formalised in 1996 in the Project Management Institute’s A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide). Before this Guide was published, several milestones served as precursors for it. These include the first Project Management Professional (PMP®) credential and certifications awarded in 1984.

The PMBOK has continually been updated to reflect new knowledge, methods and best practices. The American National Standards Institute and the International Organization for Standardization recognise it as the source for project management standards. The international higher education community and business schools embrace the framework and use it to train project managers.

Why should you take PMBOK courses?

For a project manager, a universal set of best practices is vital because PMBOK is the standard by which PMP certification is attained. This lays a strong foundation for their project management career.

For employers, PMBOK is crucial because it helps them identify professionals who can step in and apply standardised practices within the business and across departments, including areas such as quality management. The alternative is retraining employees who are hired from outside or promoted from within in highly complex proprietary processes; these employees will not have been vetted and refined by the experiences of project managers across industries and over time.

Standardising project management is highly beneficial, as it establishes compatible practices between departments and makes collaboration efficient by aligning project management processes and process groups within the existing project. PMBOK addresses risk management and teaches which practices work, which don’t, and why. This reduces guesswork and inordinate risk-taking. It also contributes to effective project management through the implementation of a robust project management plan that guides the project team and controls project costs. Project managers can make educated decisions about how and when to break the rules, if that is ever necessary.

PMBOK Course Requirements and Study Plan

We have put together frequently asked questions and insights on PMBOK course requirements and how to plan to study for a certification such as PMP.

What are the requirements for a PMBOK course?

Introductory PMBOK courses like Fast Start in Project Management do not require previous experience. But the Project Management Institute (PMI) requires professionals to have relevant work experience - at least three years' worth - before they can register to take the PMP exam and get certified.

In terms of whether you can take the exam without a university degree, this is still possible. What matters is a demonstration of overall project work experience. With proven project work experience and PMBOK training, professionals with less than a four-year degree, such as incomplete credits, a high school diploma, or an associate degree, can still get PMP certified.

How do you start studying for the PMP Exam?

It is highly recommended that PMP candidates invest in PMP Prep. Most successful PMP candidates spend an average of 35 hours or more preparing for the exam.

If your goal is to gain a PMP certification, you need to prepare the for exam by booking and sitting a PMBOK course with an authorised training partner like Lumify Work.

After the course, you can read and understand the entire PMBOK Guide. The guide helps you identify fundamental aspects of project management.

Practice by applying what you learned from your PMBOK training and the PMBOK Guide to real scenarios from your project management experience.

Aligned with that, you can review the PMI's requirements for PMP experience hours and document our project experience hours in a spreadsheet.
