Why study this course

Master the skills to navigate and resolve challenging interpersonal situations.

At some point in our lives, most of us will face challenging individuals - whether they are stubborn, inconsiderate, unhappy, angry, or passive-aggressive. These encounters might be isolated incidents or ongoing challenges, particularly when these individuals are colleagues or team members. How should we respond when this occurs? And what strategies can we implement when these individuals are our employees?

This one-day workshop is designed to help you effectively manage and resolve conflicts with difficult individuals. You'll learn practical techniques for dealing with stubborn, angry, or passive-aggressive behaviours and develop strategies to turn difficult situations into opportunities for growth. Whether you encounter these challenges in the workplace or personal life, this course will equip you with the skills needed to handle them confidently and professionally.

Course subjects

Conflict as Communication

In this session, participants will learn to define conflict and understand how it is an essential component of healthy relationships. The session concludes with a self-assessment, helping participants evaluate their current conflict management strategies and identify areas for improvement.

The Benefits of Confrontation

Participants will explore a framework for deciding when and how to engage in confrontation. They will also uncover the potential benefits that can arise from addressing issues head-on, rather than avoiding them.

Proactive Problem Prevention

Through a combination of lectures and interactive group work, participants will examine several key strategies for preventing issues before they escalate.

Emotional Intelligence

This session will highlight the importance of emotional intelligence when dealing with difficult individuals. Participants will learn how their behaviour can significantly impact the outcome of challenging interactions.

Getting to the Core Issues

Often, leaders address only surface-level problems without tackling the underlying issues. In this session, participants will learn strategies for digging deeper to address root causes, leading to a healthier workplace environment.

Anger Management Techniques

With anger being a common challenge, this session provides practical guidelines for managing personal anger, responding effectively to others’ anger, and using assertive communication to navigate tense situations.

Problem-Solving Approaches

Participants will work in small groups to explore and apply eight different approaches to problem-solving, tailored to real-life scenarios.

Three-Step Conflict Resolution Model

This session introduces a structured, three-step process that participants can use to resolve conflicts efficiently. Participants will apply the model to a case study, reinforcing the skills learned.

Role-Playing Exercises

Participants will engage in role-playing exercises, using pre-assigned scenarios to practice the techniques learned throughout the day. This hands-on practice is designed to solidify their understanding and application of these skills.

Transforming Negative Attitudes

Building on earlier discussions, this session delves deeper into how negative attitudes can lead to unproductive interactions. Participants will explore methods for shifting these attitudes to foster more positive engagements.

Understanding Non-Compliance

This session focuses on the ten most common reasons why people do not follow through on tasks and explores strategies for addressing these challenges effectively.

De-Stressing Techniques for Tough Situations

As the workshop concludes, participants will learn six practical de-stressing techniques to apply when situations become challenging, helping them maintain composure and clarity under pressure.

Workshop Wrap-Up

To close the day, participants will have the opportunity to ask any remaining questions and develop an actionable plan to implement the skills they’ve learned.
