For a subset of senior security experts, having a holistic and organisational view of security is the name of the game. One of our cyber security training attendees who works in the public sector recently shared feedback on how CISSP training has offered him new perspectives and a wider network.

What can you expect from CISSP Training?

The CISSP course by ISC2 is a five-day program that primarily focuses on the different domains that a security expert needs to know about so they can help manage the information security of an organisation. These include asset security, access management, software development security and more.

It is recommended for senior security experts with at least 5 years' experience in cyber security and who work with a more holistic view of security and how end users and different departments contribute to risk management. The CISSP course and certification are ideal for validating your knowledge of cybersecurity strategies and hands-on implementation. Learn more here.

The IT Security Training Experience

Hardy Vargas is an IT specialist and a public servant. He works in the Technology and Security Division of the Australian Bureau of Statistics. We appreciate how ready he was to share his feedback on CISSP training with Lumify Work through a video interview. You can watch it here. A transcript is available below.

Tell us a little bit about your current role.

I am one of the Assistant Directors for the IT Security team at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). I am based in Sydney, but we have staff across other states. And most of our people are in Melbourne and the ACT.

I am also a member of the training advisory group for technical training within our Technology & Security Division.

How did you come up with the idea of getting Security training?

Training is an integral part of our Development and Performance Agreements (DPA). Given the global shortage of digital workers, especially in Cyber Security, we spend time and effort in ensuring our staff get the training they need to do their jobs, keeping their knowledge and skills up to date and progressing their careers. Three members of my team have also undertaken the CISSP course and all three of them got themselves certified as well.

What was your training experience like?

Overall, it was good. So much material to cover in just 3 days (sic).

Due to COVID, the whole class was conducted virtually. That has advantages and disadvantages. All the participants in my class were experienced operators and managers. The group shared experiences and insights which to me was the most valuable part of the whole thing.

Any key takeaways from the training that stuck with you even today?

Our trainer/facilitator provided additional resources to help us prepare for the Certification Exam. Louis Cremen, is not just a knowledgeable person but he is also active in the cyber security community so the resources he shared have been used by so many others. To me, the exam itself is both a Knowledge and Comprehension based test, so it is important to do a lot of practice tests.

How has the training impacted your work?

The course has given me an appreciation for how people in the private sector and other government agencies handle various situations; this includes governance and playbooks for security incidents. We also shared knowledge and experiences on tools and dealing with various third-party suppliers. My network of colleagues is a little wider now due to the training.

Furthermore, I feel better equipped to advise other staff on the various certification paths available in cyber security as well.

I am aiming to take the exam at the end of the year, so in my ‘spare’ time I review the materials and try the practice tests.
