Certified Ethical Hacker Certification – why is the exam so challenging?

In my recent conversations within the security community there has been much discussion around how hard the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification exam is to pass – and it seems to be causing some consternation. Particularly since the course content has been updated to V9 and the exam is not versioned.

That’s right – whilst the content for official courses is versioned, the exam is not.

The reason for this may seem obscure – course content clearly does need versioning when altered/updated so why shouldn’t the exam match this versioning?

With the CEH exam, the reality is that the content is under independent review – questions may be updated more regularly than the courseware  to meet ANSI accreditation standards.

It is a key ANSI requirement that there is separation between training of the skills and testing services to prove necessary skills to earn the certification.

ANSI is a private non-profit organisation. Its mission is “to enhance U.S. global competitiveness and the American quality of life by promoting, facilitating, and safeguarding the integrity of the voluntary standardisation and conformity in assessment system.”

The accreditation process is one designed for impartiality – those earning the certification accredited to this standard can demonstrate to employers the value of their certification.

This certainly isn’t an exam for the faint at heart.
