For its 17th edition, Skillsoft conducted a worldwide survey of 8,000 IT professionals and decision makers and released the Skillsoft 2022 IT Skills and Salary Report.

On training modalities, the survey found that a formal, instructor-led approach was a favourite, as opposed to peer-to-peer training.

Almost 70% of IT professionals who participated in formal, expert-led AWS cloud training sessions at work and/or live, instructor-led, online training sessions rated them to be “very” or “extremely” effective.

IT professionals also favour virtual learning provided the quality is high, the content is updated and it offers hands-on practice. Over the past 12 months, virtual learning was one of the popular training types:

• 63% of IT professionals attended a web-based, on-demand session
  

• Over 50% used free online learning tools
  

When it comes to subscription-based learning, responding learners said the following criteria were important:

1. 46% quality of content

2. 41% opportunities for hands-on practice

3. 33% updated content
   

The SkillSoft report also indicated a need for organisations to improve how they communicate about their training programs, so employees can take full advantage of them. These can be team announcements, career development strategy group discussions, pre- session emails to staff, calendar invitations with automated messages, one-on-one catchups with direct supervisors and reminders on group chat channels.
